The £500,000-a-week forward lasted 52 minutes before having to be substituted while the Saints led 1-0.

Andreas Pereira equalised moments after Sanchez was forced to be replaced by Diogo Dalot.

And Manchester United ultimately went on to snatch a crucial 3-2 victory in the fight for a top-four finish.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, though, will be concerned by Sanchez’s potential long-term absence, despite his troubled time at Old Trafford, and here’s what we know.

What’s the damage?

Sanchez damaged his ligaments in his right knee after a collision with Southampton defender Jan Bednarek.

He hobbled off with United medics and went off down the tunnel, and it appears he won’t return soon.

Solskjaer admitted after the game he feared it would be a ligament issue for Sanchez.

“It will be six to eight weeks without playing”

Pedro Onate

The United interim manager said on Saturday: “He got a knock on his knee. It might be his ligaments. We’ll do the scan tomorrow.

“Hopefully, it won’t be too bad but we won’t know until we’ve done the scans.”

According to Chile’s physiotherapist Pedro Onate, Sanchez is not optimistic of his chances at making a major contribution in the season run-in.

Discussing the condition of United’s Chile international, Onate told newspaper El Mercurio: “We communicated with Sánchez, he has had his scans and that’s the injury.

“There will be no problems for him to play in the Copa América [this summer] because it will be six to eight weeks without playing.

“The medial ligament is a troublesome injury but not so complex.”

What United games will Sanchez miss?

The Red Devils have a minimum of 11 matches left in the 2018/19 campaign.

Up next is Wednesday’s crunch Champions League round of 16 second leg away to PSG.

United trail 2-0 on aggregate and will certainly not have Sanchez available for selection.

With a two-month absence anticipated, that would leave just United’s Premier League finale at home to Cardiff as a possibility for Sanchez to feature.

In the meantime, after the PSG tie, United go to Sanchez’s former club Arsenal in the league before travelling to Wolves for their FA Cup quarter final and then hosting Watford in the league to round off March.

In April, Sanchez could miss all five Premier League games at Wolves, at home to West Ham, at Everton, at home to neighbours Manchester City and at home to Chelsea.

United’s penultimate fixture, which is a realistic target for Sanchez, is at Huddersfield on May 4.
