Manchester United bemused by Jose Mourinho’s criticism as HE blocked structural changes. MANCHESTER UNITED are bemused by Jose Mourinho slating the club’s structure.

Mourinho claimed a director of football is a MUST during his first interview since being sacked as boss a month ago.

Yet United say Mourinho was AGAINST any such move at Old Trafford.

Mourinho said: “A club must have an owner or president, a CEO or direct executive, a sports director or football director and then a football manager.

“This is a structure that can cope with all the problems that modern football is bringing to us.”

United say they were trying to introduce that structure — with a director of football — but were put off by Mourinho’s opposition.

Mourinho also hinted at player-power being a problem at Old Trafford.

Yet interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists that is not the case.

The Norwegian, who goes into today’s clash with Brighton having won all six games since taking charge, said: “If players want to help the team, they deserve to be here.

“If they don’t want to help the team then they don’t deserve to be here.”

Solskjaer does, however, accept that managers may now need to adapt their approach to modern footballers who can double up as a social media celebrity.

He added: “I worked with older players than me and older managers, so I know that type.

“But I’m also young enough to know it’s a different era. Now everything is on Facebook or Twitter or whatever. It is straight away.”
