Rangers opened up a two goal with just twenty minutes left, but Benefica battled back to tie it at 2 and force the draw. Rangers got the scoring going in the 7’ with an Arfield goal and then doubled the advantage in the 69’. The momentum shifted to Benfica in the 78’ when Tavernier scored an own goal which helped Benfica get back into the match. In the 81’ Pizzi tied it up and from there both sides would on to tie.

With the draw on Matchday 4, a draw in each of their next games would send both sides on to the next round.
